The polar night in Skoganvarre lasts from the end of November to the end of
January. From February the days start getting longer.
Although most people donīt start ice fishing until April or May, are the
conditions here quite alright from the end of February. March is absolutely
great for ice fishing.
The local "gurus" start ice fishing up on the mountain already in January
and according to them this is the best time to catch big char.
Occasionally trout is biting quite well at the end of February as well.
If you are interested in coming here already in February, or March ask for
our special offers.
The season normally finishes in mid-May, althought there has been occasions when ice fishing has still been possible until the beginning of June.
Lake Øvrevatn provides a diverse spot for fishing. It is a part of the Lakselva salmon fishing area and ice fishing is permitted, apart from a 200 meter zone from both of the rivers. During the winter you can catch char, trout, grayling and perch. In April the ice melts first on a streamly area right by the camping ground, providing a nice close spot for ice fishing around it.
Lake Gaggavatn is located about 3 kilometers southwest from Skoganvarre, and
the northern parts of the lake lie on a military territory. Althougt fishing
on the military terrirory is only allowed for Norwegian citizens, so far no
one has got in trouble for fishing on the ice. The lake is accessible by car.
Here you can mainly catch small char.
The river flowing out of the lake has been dammed, which causes dangerous
underwater streams! No ice fishing here!!!
The margin of the water level regulation is 5 meters, which can result in an
"ice barrier" forming around the lake.
Lake Savngujavri is about 9 kilometers south from Skoganvarre, and River Savngujohka, which flows out of the lake, is traditionally a good spot for catching grayling at the end of spring.
Ice fishing is also permitted on River Vuollajohka, which is located 5 kilometers west from Skoganvarre. There you can catch char and trout. There is a snowmobile route between the lake and camping ground, so it is accessible by skis. It is also possible to arrange to have a ride there back with a snowmobile.
For those who want more privacy, we can provide huts by Lower Lake Darva (Vuolit Darvajavri) or by lake Laevnas, for a charge. Lower Lake Darva is lovated about 8 kilometers southwest from Skoganvarre, and Lake Laevnas about 28 kilometers west. The huts can accommodate 4 people max. and they have wooden floors, reindeer hides, iron heaters and gas stove. The map.
At the spring 2008, we have huts in the Lake Laevnasjavri and in the
Lake Nedredarvajavri. They are both equipped with a paraffin-stove, so
you do not need to keep watch the fire.
We recommend to anyone interested in staying in them to consider coming fairly early in the spring.
Last year the nicest conditions were on the first week of April.
